Dr. Evan C. Coates is a Doctor of Behavioral Health (DBH) and Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 18 years of experience in clinical practice, program development, and integrated behavioral health care. He specializes in the treatment of anxiety, depression, trauma, and complex behavioral health conditions, including somatic symptom presentations.Dr. Coates earned his Doctor of Behavioral Health degree from Arizona State University, a Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina, and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work with a minor in Sociology from Utah State University. His doctoral training emphasized integrating mental health care within primary care settings.
In addition to working with individual patients, Dr. Coates has extensive experience in forensic behavioral health, including conducting competency evaluations for the State of Utah. His professional background spans eating disorder treatment, substance use recovery, and trauma-focused care, allowing him to work effectively with patients presenting with complex and overlapping conditions.Dr. Coates is actively engaged in community and professional service. He serves as a chaplain with a local police department and has previously served on the Utah Division of Professional Licensing (DOPL) Social Work Licensing Board. He also served in the Utah Army National Guard.Dr. Coates practices from an evidence-based, patient-centered approach, integrating Internal Family System (IFS), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), Eye Movment Desensitation Reprocessing (EMDR), and other empirically supported interventions. He is committed to collaborative, team-based care within a Patient-Centered Medical Home model, helping patients improve functioning, strengthen resilience, and achieve meaningful, lasting change.
In his spare time, Dr. Coates is a watercolor artist and enjoys interests in forensic entomology and insect taxidermy. He values spending time with his wife and three children, especially fishing and exploring the outdoors together.
